Favela is the Brazilian word for the shanty towns or slums typically located around the outer perimeter of cities. They lack essential services such as electricity, education, plumbing and garbage collection - while cramping residents into tight and confined spaces. Houses in Favelas are constructed from various materials including bricks, garbage, and scraps.
Favelas are home to violent crime, sewage problems and unsanitary living conditions. Compound these heart breaking factors with the highest global murder rate per capita, severe drug abuse problems and rampant street gangs - you realize just how privileged you are to be a member of the lucky sperm club, enjoying your comfortable North American life.
In an attempt to restore beauty to an otherwise delapitated area, Dre Urhahn and Jeroen Koolhaas have started a project entitled “Favela Painting”. Check out their site and learn more about this amazing project.
