The Bubble Club

April 26, 2007

Kartell is a really fun company. Many of you may be familiar with Kartell from a number of well-publicized products such as the Bourgie lamp or Ghost Chairs. As someone who loves transparent objects (not people) I get pretty excited about Kartell products. Take for instance “The Bubble Club” couch (above).

Designed by Philippe Starck, the couch made entirely of polyurethane plastic does not contain wasteful materials such as interior steal framing or padding. Secondly, Kartell is mass-producing the chair in order to create economies of scale. In other words, lower manufacturing costs equals a cheaper price tag for the end consumer.

All in all “The Bubble Club” is a classic household staple that has been updated with a modern material and developed through cutting edge technology.

The chair is part of a larger line consisting of also an arm chair and end table. Top this up with one of their famous table lamps and you now have what Kartell calls the “industrial living room” I’m not sure if this is a good thing but the pieces are really cool.

At about $700.00 CAD for the sofa you are at a middle ground in the sofa market, but at the very bottom end of the designer sofa market. It is marketed as “design within reach”. This contrasts heavily the $4500.00USD chair I’m currently courting. While I won’t call this price a steal (my last couch cost $250.00CAD) I will admit to wanting one. Think about it, how could you not want one? You can hose of your couch! Its vegan friendly, it can be made of recycled materials and requires no children to produce it, well no human children at least. 2yr old robots don’t have people protecting them (yet).
