A fixed-gear bike is any bike that has only one gear and no brakes or freewheel. In the absence of the freewheel mechanism, fixed-gear bikes are unable to coast. Quite simply, whatever direction the back wheel is turning, the pedals turn in the same direction. By the rider resisting the direction that the pedals are turning, the speed of the bike can be controlled.
Although fixed-gear bikes have been popular with bike couriers, enthusiasts, and the hipster community for the past twelve years or so, main stream media has shown little interest. Surprisingly, The NY Times recently published an extensive article and interactive feature entitled “Unstoppable” that examines the trendy subculture.
The article touches upon the famous elliptical bike track Kissena Velodrome, shops that cater to the culture, and some builders that specialize in fixed-gear bike design and construction.
Should the hipsters be included or excluded? Read the article and you decide!
