Akomplice Season 6: Mostly A Disaster

May 20, 2007

The sixth-season releases from Hip-Hop influenced street wear brand Akomplice are just as disappointing as the sub-niche itself. The brand seems to denounce any form of creative integrity by sticking with the overly played out gun theme. While one shirt reads “Point The Guns Down”, several others feature gun use. Their message is confused and any meaning or concept behind the apparel seems absent.

With poorly designed color ways, sub-par graphics and one female-oriented garment designed for a crack-smoking ghetto princess - it’s surprising that the brand managed to come up with two t-shirts that are actually cool.

Immersed within what could be considered an overall failure, there is the play on Lacoste tee featuring the deceased Steve Irwin and another with sneakers pouring out of a Kix cereal box. Although not enough to give the brand any kind of significant weight, these clever tees reduce attention from the horrible ones - like the Statue of Liberty holding a gun, a terrible play on Keyser Soze from the Usual Suspects and a guy getting his brains blown out.

Dear Aesthetic Poetic,

We here at Akomplice are trying to set the record straight. For example, on our “Unity is Strength” tee, the gun is made up of all types of people from around the world, showing that the only way we can “blast away” all the bad stuff in our world (i.e. Hatred, Fear, Greed, Global Warming, Pollution, etc.) is if we all come together. The head is hence made up of all these words - if you can see it close enough. If you’re talking about our Liberty dress when discussing a “crack-smoking ghetto princess,” that girl is a Harvard graduate and was only bought by upscale boutiques. Also, what is wrong with wearing a tee/dress with a statement? Do you feel girls are only supposed to wear pink? Why can’t they wear that? Also, ironically, the LaCroc tee has been our most controversial, yet you love it. To each their own. We do not mean to be argumentative, we just want to clarify our meanings. We’re NOT for guns, and are all about “pointing the guns down,” sometimes you have to come across with shocking imagery to get a point across - like that picture of that kid burning from Vietnam. Thanks for your time and I hope this helps clarify our line to you.

Akomplice.

In response to Akomplice.

It sounds like you guys are trying to achieve a noble conquest but remain inconsistent in your approach like the article dictates. If you are after graphically representing the negativities associated with Hatred, Fear, Greed, Global Warming, Pollution, etc. than why not try a more sophisticated well thought out approach to your graphics that actually includes these ideas.

Guns are bad and many of us have had tragedy’s associated with gun violence impact our personal lives. Ironically guns sell and this infatuation with guns is prevalent in the street wear communities. If you want to appear like you are not about the guns then don’t put them on so many tees. Also an anti gun tee would be cool, if you guys are actually true to your message.

One tee says point the guns down, a few others are pointing guns up, one gun is pointing at you tellin not to snitch or you will get blasted, and another gun is blasting apart a humans head.

Akomplice I dont follow your point.

Fair enough Akomplice, I see the issue as almost all your tees have guns on them. Making the statement in the article true. The best tee’s you guys made are the lacoste and the kix hands down.

PS you also claim that you are not about violence yet one of your shirts is clearly indicating that if you snitch you will get blasted.

Doesn’t the back of the statue of liberty shirt read

‘America is filled with gangstas, from your neighborhood drug dealer to our government. It’s time to realize and recognize. Here Liberty comes with a gun from sun up to sun down. One’

Am I out of line or does this statement not glorify gun use?

Ha!Another blog full of people who “could have done better”.I didnt realize that a line had to be based on one overall “statement”.I believe Akomplice has alot of issues they would like to address and do a pretty good job of keeping them “clear”.I personally love the “Liberty” print and think that it is one of the better prints out in a market saturated with rip offs and posers.I also think that if more of your readers could wear the shirt to thier local high schools they would dig it.I LOVE HATERS

Thanks for your opinion Robert. And FYI we are actually not haters. One of our writers is just articulating a point based on a few relevant industry based facts. Enjoy your day and enjoy your tee bro. All the Best.

Akomplice…
Went to that season six release party in Hollywood. Everyone rockin your clothes have never been to the hood posing acting hard with guns placed on their clothes. SO DAMN tired of people glorifying ghettoes, hoods, guns and crime and being born with silverspoons in their mouths. RE-CREATE WHAT YOU LIVE!

Coco

Writer and all of the other people hating on Akomplice.

lets think about this for a second. acomplice is a T-SHIRT COMPANY. i think we can all agree that they are mostly trying to make a living. if you think about it, they are just trying to sell t-shirts, and most people want a t-shirt that looks cool, and that is somewhat the point. for example, i really like the statue of liberty shirt because of how it looks, i think the idea is genious. it truly does represent america today if you think about it. maybe the only thing it needs after all of that is the McDonalds emblem on it or something. I am glad that Akomplice is making shirts like that because they do get noticed and recognized and they seem to give points. critisizing these shirts is like critisizing art. the only difference is that art you cant parade around in and show how you feel constantly.
Truth be told,
