What Does The Internet Look Like?

June 21, 2007

Ever wonder what the Internet looks like? A lot like the diagram above, according to physicists at Tel-Aviv University in Israel. The red in the center is a cluster of 100 networks operated by massive corporations like AT&T and Google, while the purple periphery is ISP providers from around the globe.

The problem with being located on the periphery is that your data has to travel through the overly congested center, which is kind of like driving to a location but having to sit through a traffic jam first. Basically, the current state of the Internet is highly inefficient. The researchers have not offered any solutions as of yet, but say their model will allow scientists to better track the development of the web.
