Blackle: Eco Friendly Search

July 12, 2007

Our good friend Mike from Bneeth Communications recently posted an article about Blackle - an energy saving search engine from Google. The concept is simple; Blackle conserves energy by using a black instead of white screen. Recently mentioned in The Wall Street Journal, “If Google went all-black, it could save 750 megawatt-hours of energy a year (a megawatt-hour is one million watt-hours).” Geeks, you can do the math! Wow, even the Internet’s going green.

You might want to note that Blackle is just the first page of http://www.searchincolor.com, a site which has offered google search in color since a much longer time. There are other color combinations on searchincolor which are energy saving..in general a dark background with light text will save energy over a standard white background.
