The Rice Art Of Inakadate Japan

August 2, 2007

Inakadate is a small village located in the Minamitsugaru District of Aomori, Japan. The total area of the village is 22.31 km² with a population just shy of 10,000. Each year, farmers in the area create magnificent crop art by intermixing purple and yellow-leafed kodaimai rice with their local green-leafed tsugaru-roman variety. Viewed from above, these works of art are stunning. This year’s masterpiece is a recreation of a famous woodblock print from Hokusai’s 36 Views of Mount Fuji and will remain ‘on display’ until the crop is harvested in September.
