Mass Tram America

October 28, 2007

Ben Missler from Mass Tram America envisions this large-scale elevated monorail as the future of public transportation. The tramcars are fabricated from salvaged airplane fuselages, and once attached to the rail system are propelled by motorized wheels that draw their power from solar panels or wind turbines attached to support towers.

Does this seem unrealistic? Missler claims that the technology required is quote, “off the shelf,” and Mass Tram expects to have a working prototype developed within three years. If this concept proves to be workable and economically feasible, cities around the world will need to re-evaluate their current public transportation systems in order to effectively reduce carbon emissions.

seems like a good opportunity for cities with undeveloped transit systems, but most highly developed urban systems are owned and operated by private companies, so I expect they will find their own method to reduce operating cost/carbon emissions.
