Funky Forest: Amsterdam

December 9, 2007

I remember dreading elementary school field trips to Vancouver’s Science World as a kid. Okay, maybe watching the IMAX movie made for a good time, but other than that, the whole experience seemed kind of bogus. My opinion as a youngster would have surely been different if Science World had something like Funky Forest.

Funky Forest is a captivating digital ecosystem where children are able to create trees by pressing their bodies up against the wall. As in real life, ensuring that the trees receive enough water is critical to the health of the forest and the various creatures that inhabit it. So to keep the tree alive, they must divert water to it from a waterfall. Trees that receive enough water flourish, while those that don’t fade away. Interactive in nature, the vibrantly colored installation and its life-like sounds are as much fun for adults as they are for kids.

Designed by motion graphics designer Emily Gobeille and interactive designer Theodore Watson, Funky Forest was created for the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam.
