Although domestic beers can be tasty and enjoyable, imports are where it’s really at. Like knowledge of fine wine, understanding good from bad beer says a lot about who you are as a person. For those that rarely venture beyond liquor store staples Kokanee and Canadian, here’s a list of affordable must try brewski’s that taste great, complement one’s personal style, and signify a worldly pallet.
Steinlager - New Zealand
In 1958, the infamous black budget resulted in New Zealand barring all beer imports. This forced New Zealand brewers to produce a lager of international quality. From 1977 to 1980, Steinlager won the Les Amis du Bin Award, the most coveted beer award in the world. It’s large size, crisp and clean taste, and proven track record of attracting Kiwis from across the room to complement you on your fine taste in beer, make it a winner in our books.
Czechvar - Czech Republic
For those unaware, Czechvar is the original Bud Light recipe brewed with European standards. The result is a yellow-gold brew with strong hoppy accents. Unlike the American version, Czechvar is refreshing and not watered down. For ultimate enjoyment, pair the beverage with tapas from the Six Acres pub in Vancouver.
Duvel - Belgium
Although short and stubby, this brew packs a mean punch. It’s similar in taste to Leffe Blonde, except more heavily carbonated and somewhat fruity tasting. Be cautious with this one! Too many Duvels and you’ll be hugging the porcelain bus begging the lord for forgiveness. In our opinion, it’s liquid gold.
Schneider Weisse - Bavaria, Germany
A rich and creamy hefeweizen that pairs perfectly with a fresh cold-cut sandwich. It pours a murky orange and has a long-lasting creamy head. With hints of banana and clove, Schneider Weisse is an all around solid beer definitely worth a couple of Deutsche Marks.
Zywiec - Poland
A delicious lager brewed to perfection with tatry-mountain water. Smooth and refreshing!
Baltika - Russia
Baltika tastes damn good considering it’s a 9% beer. It’s strong with little to no bitterness and a well-rounded flavor, which along with it’s price, make it a suitable choice. Beware! After four or more, your slurred words and disheveled demeanor will make others think you are a Ruskie.
Kirin Ichiban - Japan
A strong, refreshing, light-tasting lager with minimal aftertaste. It pairs beautifully with fresh tuna sashimi or Japanese curry.
