The Decapitator

January 7, 2008

Guerrilla artist the Decapitator has been making his/her mark on the streets of London by beheading high-profile advertisements around the city, leaving only bloody stumps.

As mentioned in Wired’s article “Culture-Jamming Decapitator Hacks London Ads“, “The Decapitator’s culture jamming pieces are reminiscent of the style of popaganda artist Ron English, whose seminal work in billboard subvertising involved covering mainstream advertisements with his own art.”

I find the Decapitators work much more intriguing than that of New York-based street art vandal, the Splasher. After all, chopping the heads off of people in advertising posters is way more creative than splashing paint on wheat-pasted artworks.

Thoughts?

Wile the Decapitator’s works may turn ones stomach and not be the appropriate for young children to see, it perfroms a need function in print advertising. A way to lash back at what the Decapitator may see as false imagery or false messages in advertising.Advertising that tells people what they should think, look and how they should act. There is no comment box in print advertising. And agency’s are unlikely to run an “anti ad” even if you have the thousands to pay for it. Besides the Decapitator is doing it way than the Splasher, the Splasher just recks works good bad or in deferent.
