“Chinglish” In China

January 9, 2008

With the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing rapidly approaching, the Chinese government has recruited several bloggers and linguists to help ensure that the English portions of the city’s signs are properly translated and free of error.

Recently, the F-word has been popping up on many signs leaving government officials bewildered and expats amused. According to LAEM, ” Sinologist, Victor Mair, recently announced that he may have found the culprit: a translation program that translates the Chinese ‘gan’, meaning ‘dry’ or ‘to do’ [into] the most notorious word in the English language”. I think it’s safe to say that Chinglish in China has gotten totally out of control! Ha Ha.
