1960’s Fallout Shelter

February 21, 2008

I recently came across a very interesting photo set on Flickr displaying the inside of a 1962 book, Fallout Shelter Handbook. Today, the book is nothing more than a vintage collectible, however, it speaks volumes about American political propaganda during the height of the Cold War.

In particular, the cover is completely absurd. Note the suburban American family loving life and getting along just fine in their backyard fallout shelter after an atomic attack. Mother is frolicking in a fashionable day dress preparing dinner, and father is relaxing while enjoying smoking his pipe.

Click here to scan through images from the rest of the book. Included are instructions on how to fabricate a fallout shelter of your own.

Makes me wonder if in 40 years we’ll look back with equal disdain and confusion on things like FOX news and the terror alert levels.

I completely agree Nathan, in terms of todays media we are facing an entirely different propaganda. Todays propaganda is based on instant dissemination of fear. In many ways it is much scarier than this book.

In a strange way, this post reminds me of whats happening in the news with the whole satellite thing. Perhaps guides of the not so distant future will include elements of what to do when an information system, or banks IT network goes down after a satellite is blasted out of the sky!
