Regent Park: Fauxreel Goes Big

June 5, 2008

A far cry from commissioned corporate art, the latest project by Fauxreel (aka Dan Bergeron) aims at drawing awareness to residents of Regent Park (one of Toronto’s oldest social housing projects) that have been evicted from their homes because the buildings are being torn down and rebuilt.

According to Fauxreel, “The buildings of Regent Park are in the process of being torn down and rebuilt, so the idea is supposed to make the residents literally become part of the physical landscape, challenge some of the pre-conceived notions that other Torontoian’s have of these people and stoke the discussion surrounding the displacement of some of Regent Park’s residents as they are kicked out of their homes for this re-build…”

I really love this project - the aesthetic and the concept behind it. By drawing attention to the people who made this complex their home, Fauxreel frames the deconstruction/reconstruction in terms of the impact on individuals and families - in particular, children and the elderly, those who are most in need of community and support.

I am interested in seeing how the posters evolve as redevelopment continues, and how the meaning changes as each image is destroyed along with the buildings….

I think that this project is very relevant to the massive commercial and residential developments we are seeing in Vancouver right now, and the ongoing displacement of our city’s poorest, weakest citizens.

this is a really great idea, literally putting a human face on the subject so people can see that real lives are being affected here. this is kick ass!

does anyone remember “the casual passer-by i met at 11:09 am” (paris 1971) black and white portraits by braco dimitrijevic? posted on buildings, mounted on boards…
