Mermaids, Homophobia and Slut Machine

July 27, 2008

Is W+K all about promoting chaos? You decide. Their recent print/outdoor campaign for Nike is accused of flagrant gay bashing by loads of commenters on the W+K site where the work is posted. I’m not sure there’s anything homophobic about these ads. Don’t NBA players love rimming? According to a gay commenter on Gawker, “It’s not balls in face that ain’t right. It’s balls in face without consent.” Also, check out this video on W+K 12. Note the shirtless dude near the end of the video with a raccoon wrapped around his shoulders. Interesting.

Hipsterrunoff - an mp3/hipster bashing mash up - has become one of my daily reads. It asks questions like: How do you know if you take your party pics site to seriously? Are nut slips the new nip slips? Seen any people that are demonstrative of recurring HRO trend gimmicks? Well, you get the picture. Occasionally, the site features pictures of anus. “And not ’slut anus’, but the kind that you want to be in a long-term relationship with.”

I just checked into Supertouch, where I scanned the last month’s worth of posts or so. As usual, there were loads of interesting things to check out. Of particular interest, this series of freakish photos from the 2008 Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Freaky.

It’s hard to find a woman that openly discusses her sexual exploits and admits publicly that she likes dick. Enter Slut Machine, a high-profile feminist blogger on Jezebel whose Pot Psychology column and personal blog One D at A Time are getting some major attention.

This Mash NYC HD Camera Test makes me wish I didn’t crash/break my bike a couple weeks back. Note to self: Don’t drink and drive my bike anymore! Extra Old Stock affects my coordination/motor abilities way more than I think.

The backlash to the Nike ad is misguided to me.. if you play basketball you know it’s the fact that someone is rising high enough that their crotch is at your face level and DUNKING OVER YOU that is the insult, not simply that there is a crotch in your face. It would be equally insulting if the dunker was male/female and dunkee male/female.

Couldn’t agree more. FYI, Nike caved to the pressure and pulled the ad. Regardless, the campaign attracted a shitload of attention.

It’s surprising Nike caved. What’s next they stop marketing themselves as an athletic company because showing athletes makes fun of obese people.
